This project addresses existing challenges in both development and implementation of efficient management of water resources. It specifically supports the EaP countries to move towards the approximation to EU acquis in the field of water management with a focus on trans-boundary river basins management as identified by the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD).
Launched in September 2016 with a duration of 4 years, the project will be implemented by UNECE and OECD, together with a consortium of EU Member States Austria and France (Umweltbundesamt - UBA and the International Office for Water) - bringing their experience in the implementation of the European Directives in the water sector.

By the end of the project, the following three results will be achieved:
  • Result 1: Legal and regulatory framework improved in line with the WFD, Integrated Water Resources Management and Multilateral Environmental Agreements.
  • Result 2: River Basins Management Plans designed and implemented in line with the WFD principles.
  • Result 3: Lessons learnt are regularly collected, shared and communicated to stakeholders.

Recently, the EUWI + East project took part in the International Conference "Challenges of River Basin Management in the context of Climate Change " organized within the framework of the Network of Water Management Organizations of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA NWO), with the assistance of UNECE and the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO), was held in Moscow on 18-19 May 2017. The prospects for practical cooperation and information interaction between the EUWI + East project and the EECCA NOW/ INBO were discussed.
